Arguing with adults is absolutely not okay. “It’s not fair.” “It’s not my turn.” “How come my brother doesn’t have to do it?” “You don’t love me.” These are all bait the children throw out with the hook to get adults sucked into a battle. Do not take the bait. The one asking the questions is the one who is in control. Stay on the initial subject by asking, “What is it that I want you to do?” or “What do you think I think?” I ask the same question repeatedly as they try different bait to engage me in battle until they stop. I won’t fight with my kids. I want my kids to be winners.
